George Clanton
George Clanton
George Clanton first became a known in 2011 as an early leader in the sample-based subgenre “Vaporwave” using the anonymous moniker “ESPRIT 空想”. His 2014 release Virtua.zip is considered by many to be the first vaporwave album composed wholly of original compositions. In 2015, Clanton temporarily dropped the monikers and released an album of vocal-driven pop songs. This record, 100% Electronica was named one of top 10 albums of 2015 by Gorilla Vs Bear. In 2016, Clanton was invited to open for Sophie and Charli XCX at Gorilla Vs Bear’s 2016 SXSW showcase, which Yahoo Music called “the best thing we saw at SXSW all week.”

Following that performance George Clanton formed a record label with his girlfriend Negative Gemini, also called “100% Electronica.” They have been touring and releasing new music from other notable internet niche artists ever since. One of the most notable releases was Clanton’s own remix album 200% Electronica, which sold all 1000 copies within a month of its release in November 2017.

On August 18th 2018, George premiered his latest album Slide in front of a sold out audience at Brooklyn New York’s “Elsewhere”. Shortly after selling out all copies on pre-order reservations alone, Slide went on to receive positive reviews from Pitchfork and The Needle Drop where Anthony Fantano deemed it “orgasmic.”
Saint Pepsi
Saint Pepsi started in December 2012 as an Ableton exercise, but is now 21-year-old Ryan DeRobertis’ main outlet for songwriting and production. The Long Island-based musician’s first release with Carpark is the “Fiona Coyne” 7-inch, to be released in August, which will be followed by a full-length album in the fall. Saint Pepsi got its start with four mixtapes of new wave and synth-pop samples. As DeRobertis developed his sampling technique, he branched out into disco and funk music. The netlabel Keats Collective released the Hit Vibes album in May 2013. Around the same time, Saint Pepsi received even more attention for his “Call Me Maybe” remix, a captivating re-working of the Carly Rae Jepsen hit.
Since then, DeRobertis has been focusing on exploring the weird side of pop music. “I’m drawn to tuneful melodies; complex chord structures; outlandish synths and drums; and I like to take pop a capellas and see how I can warp the songs while keeping the melodies almost entirely intact,” he says. The “Fiona Coyne” 7-inch showcases DeRobertis’ talent for crafting his own melodies. DeRobertis sums up his ambitions simply: “I want to make pop music for freaks, basically.

Esprit 空想
Esprit 空想
ESPRIT began in 2012 as the sample-based side-project of electronic
pop artist “George Clanton.” ESPRIT’s first two EP’s “Girls Only” and “Summer Night” are still considered essential listening for any newcomers to the vaporwave genre. In 2014, when vaporwave was still defined by its use of found music and manipulated samples, ESPRIT released his ‘Virtua.zip’ LP composed entirely of original material. In the 3 years since its release, the vaporwave scene at large has followed this trend.

After ‘Virtua.zip,’ the ESPRIT series was put on hold while George Clanton’s eponymous project’s ‘100% Electronica’ LP released in late 2015. Now 3 years later, ESPRIT returns with both the successor to ‘Virtua.zip’ and the sister album to ‘100% Electronica’ together in one piece.

‘200% Electronica’ combines fully original compositions in ESPRIT’s classic vaporwave style with chopped & screwed samples pulled from George Clanton’s own songs, inspired by two years of touring with nothing but a Roland SP 404-SX.
