PWR BTTM is a brilliant queer punk project comprised of Ben Hopkins and Liv Bruce. After releasing a split EP with Jawbreaker Reunion earlier this year, the duo is back with the video for “Ugly Cherries,” the title track off of their forthcoming LP.
The video juxtaposes two versions of Hopkins– in one, the singer listlessly sits on his bed, fools around in the kitchen, and does some painful looking crunches. In the other, Hopkins comes to life decked out in glitter, lipstick, fake bananas, and foam stickers. This harkens back to what Hopkins earlier told the Fader, “I’ve set my ‘best self,’ aka me in crazy monster drag, against my ‘worst self,’ aka me miserably staring at my cellphone alone in my apartment, in an attempt to take stock of my whole self.” The song’s powerful ending features both Hopkins and Bruce shredding along, and looking and sounding very much their “best selves.”
Ugly Cherries is due out September 18th via both Miscreant and Father/Daughter Records. We can’t wait.
