A few days ago, local pop act Francis and The Lights released a new song, “Friends,” featuring Wisconsin’s very own Bon Iver and the illustrious Kanye West. Thanks to Justin Vernon’s trademark vocal effects and delicate, expansive instrumentals, the track rises and falls gracefully; a gentle anthem of sorts. If the melody sounds familiar, that’s because Chance The Rapper sampled this song on a cut from his most recent mixtape, Coloring Book – the similarly named “Summer Friends.” The video, directed by Jake Schreier, complements the lyrics’ emphasis on the idea of a comfortable vulnerability. The stripped down set and minimalist choreography focus the viewer’s attention on the artists (who were apparently told to wear their own clothes to the shoot) and their relationships, physical and intangible, to one another.
