Originally named for the Nirvana song, “Dive,” DIIV is the nom-de-tune of the New York-based songwriter Zachary Cole Smith. The band’s mix of indie rock and shoegaze brought them instant acclaim with hits like “Sometime” and “Doused.” Their upcoming album, Is the Is Are, is set to drop later this year, and the album’s first single is out:
“Dopamine” is exactly what you would have hoped for: a mix of light-hearted chords and heavy lyrics that compliment Smith’s breathy, hypnotic chords. With their first album described as “One part THC and two parts MDMA” by Captured Tracks, DIIV’s recreational leitmotif appears to be woven into the entr’acte of their new release. Or perhaps “Dopamine” really is their new natural high.
