Artist Features

Shamir is Shamir

Shamir remains an artist, no matter what the universe puts him through. his debut record Rachet dropped in 2015 to acclaim from NPR listeners and club kids alike. After quickly rising to underground fame with his Northtown EP in 2014, the DIY popstar made a sonic splash with Rachet’s lead single “On The Regular,” a poppy banger and commercial success.

After joining SF based indie label Father/Daughter Records, Shamir’s latest album, Revelations, closely followed. Revelations is much more minimal in instrumentation & production compared to Rachet, but is even more full in sound and feeling. In some other timeline, there’s an unknown John Hughes film entirely set to Revelations. It’s the warmth in this apocalyptic neon and pastel future we find ourselves in. It’s the breath we take when we look up from our phones. They’re Shamir’s Revelations, and you should listen up.

We asked Shamir about his favorite music videos and inspirations ahead of this Thursday’s performance with Partner, Frances Rose.

You write horoscopes with your mom for Talkhouse. What is the theme song for Scorpios (your sign)?

I think the theme song for scorpios is “The Louvre” by Lorde. She’s very scorpio and so are her lyrics.

Was there a video that inspired your music video for “Straight Boy?

yeah, old video inspired the current one after i had to take it down because the director of the first one turned out to be a bad person.

What is the ultimate “90s Kid” song?

I think every 90s kid knows the fresh Prince of bel air theme.

What is a song that influenced the vibe of Revelations?

I think a big song that inspired revelations is Garbage Man by Hole.

What is one of your favorite songs of 2017?

Revenge Song by Corbin. His voice is so amazing in that song and i love the mix of rnb, metal, and electronic.

What is your favorite Vivian Girls song?

My favorite vivian girl song probably has to be “When Im Gone”. I’ve been covering it live.
