British MC JME isn’t known for being “mainstream.” But then, how mainstream could a teetotaling, vegan, English rapper be? Founder of the label Boy Better Know and grime legend, JME peaked on the charts with his song “96 F**kries” coming in ten sales short of a top 40 spot… meaning that we can still count him among our best-kept secrets.
His new release, “The Very Best,” is exactly what you’re thinking: a rap tune about trading Pokemon cards. Does it get better than that? I don’t think so. The song is clever and hysterical on a number of different levels, gangster rap as seen through the mind of a middle school badass. Any old MC can sing about fancy cars—but can they sing about fancy cards?
