New York musician Kristin Welchez (formerly Dee Dee of Dum Dum Girls)’s latest iteration, Kristin Kontrol, just dropped a b-side to go with her impressive debut solo effort, X-Communicate, that she released on Sub Pop earlier this year. Post after post has already been written commenting on the obvious nostalgia of Kontrol’s sound, teeming with eighties pop-star vibes. And while this track does fit within that canon, it achieves more. It highlights Kontrol’s soaring vocal range, her voice gliding seamlessly over the smooth synth-pop production, in a way that her oeuvre of garage rock didn’t offer her the opportunity to do. She surpasses any need for auto-tune or other crutches of the modern pop star, basking in the freedom of her newfound creative reincarnation and channeling the ferocity of the icons that came before her. Take in all the 21st Century Madonna vibes on December 13 when she performs an intimate in-the-round show at (le) Poisson Rouge.
