Dark and a little spooky, ZZZ’s is a post-punk/no wave band from Japan. They now reside in Brooklyn, where they’re producing visceral tracks peppered with faint, ethereal vocals.
They formed in 2011, but began their ascent in underground music circles in 2012, touring the U.S. with stops at SXSW, CMJ, and Miami Art Basel. Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth happened upon them in Miami, choosing them to open for a secret show and as his favorite band of 2012. The New York Times caught their CMJ performance, garnering positive reviews praising their courageous innovation. They said of the band: “ZZZ’s were testing concepts in every song; luckily, they were also kicking up an unstoppable ruckus.” This rise culminated in the release of their 2013 EP, produced by Jonathan Kreinik (The Rapture, Le Tigre, Trans Am). 2013 also brought European festival appearances with the likes of Savages, The Black Angels, ADULT., and more.
Slowly but surely, ZZZ’s is accumulating a cult presence in the States. Their post punk sound and gloomy aesthetic should appeal to fans of Holograms, Perfect Pussy, and Goat. We’re proud to present ZZZ’s on their (adopted) home turf, and what better place than Saint Vitus.
