Brooklyn band Shapes In Calgary have just released their first single, “Happy Now.” Reminiscent of 80s pop tropes, the song soars gently and desperately, capitalizing on its melancholy timbre to highlight dreamy synths and earnest vocals. Band members Alyssa Ciorciari and Gary Atturio record their songs together in a small home studio, apparently only using a drum machine and a synthesizer. Atturio’s stripped-down approach to production creates space for Ciorciari’s vocals to carry as she reflects wistfully on the emotional toll of a strained relationship. Shapes In Calgary play Alphaville this fall, but until then, “Happy Now” should tide you over for now.
