On the surface, TV Girl is a sunny, throwback splash of ‘60s French pop and southern California soul. Yet, under that shiny veneer lays a dark heart, beating with sharp wit and cynical alienation, and the music is all the more alluring for it.

TV Girl was formed in 2010 by Brad Petering as an outlet to blend the love of Spector-esque girl-group pop with an emerging interest in hip-hop. Featuring shimmering vocals and sampled beats, the self-titled debut EP of the same year turned heads online immediately; the group’s lush vintage rhythms and timeless pop hooks were even making waves on the BBC. In 2014, TV Girl unveiled their first full-length, the critically acclaimed French Exit.
The album keeps true to the TV Girl charm with a bevy of electronic samplings infused throughout light and airy guitars, whirring organs, and ethereal vocals. However, this record is not all summer nostalgia, and there are plenty of times where French Exit reads like disaffected fiction. The moody characters in these songs are fueled by revenge as often as love, underpinned by desperation and a deep yearning to connect.
Since then, the band has toured consistently nationally and internationally. In 2016, TV Girl released their 2nd LP, Who Really Cares, “An album about sex or lack thereof, and its consequences or lack thereof.” The band is currently working on their 3rd LP.
HDLSS
HDLSS (pronounced headless), formerly known as Headless Horseman, is a Ridgewood, NY

based post-Yeezus, glitch/nocturnal-pop recording project comprised of singer-songwriter/producer “Far”, a South-Asian, first generation American, and producer/instrumentalist Wolfy, of Irish descent. The project began in 2010 creating damaged pop music utilizing a collage recording style on trashed equipment, unintentionally making electronic music out of acoustic instruments. The result was their debut, HDLSS, released on Greedhead Entertainment in 2011.

The band played their first show opening for Avey Tare (of Animal Collective), and from there, things took off quickly. The surf leaning single Wavlngth and debut album garnered significant critical attention from outlets like Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, Time Out NY, NPR among others, quickly labeling them a ‘band to watch.’ They landed a highly coveted residency at Piano’s where each night was hosted by a different outlet, including one that MTV Desi taped, sponsored and planned with the band to feature fellow South Asian artists. Following the residency, they toured and played festivals like SXSW and CMJ, performing with a swath of artists such as Blood Orange, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Nite Jewel, Kria Brekkan (of Mum), DIIV, Das Racist, Autre Ne Veut, Los Campesinos! among others.

In 2012, the band took a hiatus due to mental health issues and extenuating circumstances that briefly ended Far and Wolfy’s friendship. Luckily, the two ended up reconciling their differences, and started writing again in 2015, resulting in the LP DUMB that was completed in 2017. As a reintroduction to the band, HDLSS are releasing a mini-album in June 2017, Selections from DUMB, featuring songs that may or may not show up on the LP. The release was recorded/produced by HDLSS and mastered by Yale Yng-Wong (Grizzly Bear, Chairlift) and Jonathan Schenke (Parquet Courts).

What began as a lo-fi experiment has blossomed into a highly ambitious, expansive, post-genre concept album. Songs that began as attempted imitations of popular styles mutated into new forms and became accidental satire out of sheer ignorance. The mini-album features synthetic string and horn sections, manipulated electronics, and a meticulously hand crafted sound—laced with glitches, noise, samples and subversive lyrics. For the duo, the process of recording and writing occur simultaneously, incorporating mistakes and found sounds often witnessing the songs write themselves, something they describe as their “headless” pathos: “cutting off the head to embrace the instinct of the will.” As Abdullah Saeed said in an early profile of the group for MTV, “It’s amazing what two musicians are capable of when they put their collective lack of a head together.”

Selections from DUMB is a document of struggles with mental health, substance abuse, lyme disease induced psychosis, the will to nothingness, and for Far, disconnection felt as a Muslim
in America. More broadly, however, it grapples with complicity and cultural apathy. Dumb and numb have become synonymous, as we are increasingly desensitized to militarized police/brutality, global surveillance, economic disparity, disposable consumerism, rape culture, xenophobia, white superiority and the disenfranchisement of minorities. Participating in and bearing witness to one’s own dumbing down becomes a kind of paralysis: through the bystander effect, inaction becomes complicity. Living in perpetual confusion of over stimulation, losing identity in favor of group-think ideology, watching as thoughts disappear and wondering where they go… Selections from DUMB implores an indictment of the self, ultimately posing the question: just how dumb have I become?
