Toro y Moi has up and got himself a collaboration with possibly “the coolest mother-funker on the planet” for his latest one-off release: the teal-beareded DIY rapper from ATL, Rome Fortune. “Pitch Black” revels in a tempered R&B and industrial tincture that is a far cry from Toro y Moi’s typically chill indie psych-pop vibes. That being said, Toro y Moi still successfully channels his inner DJ persona — Les Sins — to produce a track that sounds more at home in Rome Fortune’s musicscape than his own.
“Pitch Black” begins and ends in medias res as if this groove is just a teaser of what’s possible here. In fact, all of the singles Toro y Moi has released in the last month (tagged #samantha) have been demurely brief. This single is woefully ephemeral, leaving the listener no choice but to hit that replay button for a second wave of Rome Fortune’s traipsing flow over soothing organs and industrial synths. Rome Fortune’s soul may be pitch black, “Breaking hearts like back to back to back,” but this track is bashful gold.
